書籍介紹
FeatureSENTENCE PROCESSING AND COMPREHENSION explores the complex mechanisms of sentence processing and comprehension, with a special focus on Chinese relative clause (RC) processing. Chinese RCs, characterized by inherent ambiguities and unique typological features, offer a valuable testing arena for competing theories of sentence processing.
This volume critically evaluates major theoretical models, highlighting their respective strengths and limitations, while offering a novel perspective on the widely discussed notion of processing asymmetry in Chinese RCs. It further underscores the significant role of memory interference in language processing. Drawing on extensive experiments using a cross-modal paradigm—where auditory processing is concurrently interrupted by visually presented stimuli—the author presents empirical evidence that reveals dynamic patterns in Chinese RC processing. These findings provide new insights into the ongoing debate on RC processing asymmetry.
Building upon over a decade of empirical research, this book integrates evidence from the author’s 2011, 2018, 2019, and 2023-2024 studies, which progressively develop the Modularity and Interference-based Sentence Processing and Comprehension (MIPC) Model. The proposed MIPC model offers a plausible explanation for the complexities of language processing and addresses the controversies surrounding the differential ease of processing subject-extracted RCs (SRCs) versus object-extracted RCs (ORCs) in Mandarin Chinese, emphasizing the crucial role of working memory in language comprehension. This research not only deepens our understanding of sentence processing mechanisms but also carries significant implications for language acquisition, pedagogy, and communication strategies. While the current memory- and interference-based approach foregrounds the role of working memory—potentially encouraging inquiry that privileges cognitive mechanisms over linguistic structures per se—this book still opens a dialogue with diverse theoretical perspectives, fostering collaboration and a more integrated understanding of how humans process sentences.
Sentence Processing and Comprehension is both accessible and scholarly, making it an invaluable resource for linguists, psycholinguists, cognitive scientists, and all those interested in the intricate processes that underlie language comprehension.
